[lit-ideas] Nit-picking?

I guess I'm getting old.  Listening to local weather tonight I wonder  when 
the word "tempcher" came into being and when adjectives & adverbs as  
interchangeable became the norm ("the car was going by slower").  
 
I know, I know.  I've posted similar complaints before.  And I  know, I know, 
morphing of language, descriptive rather than descriptive grammar,  
pronunciation, etc.  But it still grates.  And makes Austen sound more  and 
more like 
music.
