It did make sense for the capitalist. In 1914, Henry Ford cut the work
day in his Highland Park, Michigan, plant from nine hours to eight, so
that he could run the plant on three shifts around the clock. He also
raised the daily wage to five dollars, which was almost double the
previous wage.
It should be noted though that Ford was no friend of organized labor.
