Like Andre, I don't trust technology and would prefer to be cold, even in a forest in Poland. Besides, electric blankets, as has been discovered since the film was made, are bad for one's health. Better to be cold and thereby gain some compassion for other cold people.

One small thing worth noticing: whenever Andre or Wally are talking about people being "deeply asleep" or not paying attention to their own lives, Louis Malle has the white-haired waiter appear in the background or arrive to serve them.

It's hard to tell where they are in the film, not only because Giuliani cleaned the place up so much (e.g., no graffiti subway cars), but also because most of the good restaurants are west and south of the establishing shot. In the beginning, Wally appears to be walking north from Canal on Wooster Street. When the Satie is playing at the end, his cab is heading north, first apparently on Park Avenue, then on east on First Avenue. Still, it's not as confusing about local geography as most NYC films.

I saw it three times (four if you count the '80s) before returning it to the library.
