Yes Waheed Alli is i think great. >>>>>>> But I worry for him and all like him. <<<<<<< He's doing just fine! Really. From working class early school leaver to multimillionaire, high profile, high profile gay Muslim. He isn't estranged from his, half Muslim, half-Hindu, family. Young gay Muslims (and non-Muslim South Asian gay men|) do face problems here, certainly, the Albert Kennedy Trust supports them (as it does all young GLBT people), and there are support groups, and no doubt the general climate here helps; but yes it's rough. >>>>>>>>>>> As regards the details of the various legal measures you cite concerning gays, I am truly impressed. Some US states have full gay marriage, it's just my hunch that we'll have it fairly soon. But certainly there's more resistance there to full gay rights, our antidiscrimination laws are far more inclusive, and strong. >>>>>>>>>> We also have Muslim legislators in the Congress. I believe there are two. <<<<<<<<<< Keith Ellison and Andre Carson -- both D. We have 8 Muslim MPs. I don't know how many Muslims are in the Lords. I commend Baron Alli (Waheed Alli), for what he has done. I wish him a long life. But I worry for him and all like him. I think gay marriages will come soon, meanwhile, very very soon, they will be celebrated in religious buildings and incorporate religious language, thanks to an amendment proposed by our first openly gay peer, Baron Alli (Waheed Alli), Muslim. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Alli has used his political position to argue for gay rights. He spearheaded the campaign to repeal Section 28.[8] He advocated lowering the age of consent for homosexuals from 18 to 16, equal to heterosexuals; this eventually became law as the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 2000. It was during a heated exchange with conservative opponents, led by Baroness Young, that he informed his fellow peers that he was gay. In April 1999, he said in a speech, "I have never been confused about my sexuality. I have been confused about the way I am treated as a result of it. The only confusion lies in the prejudice shown, some of it tonight [i.e. in the House], and much of it enshrined in the law."[4] He acted as Tony Blair's representative in the House of Lords in the passage of the Civil Partnership Act 2004, giving same-sex couples in the United Kingdom the ability to enter into civil partnerships with equal rights and responsibilities to civil marriage[citation needed]. In 2009, he spearheaded an effort to repeal clauses in the Civil Partnerships Act which prohibited religious institutions from hosting civil partnerships on their premises. This campaign culminated in a bipartisan amendment, which became part of the Equality Act 2010[9]. He is one of very few openly gay Muslim figures in public life anywhere in the world, along with Pav Akhtar, also a Labour politician based in London. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< --- On Fri, 21/1/11, Judith Evans <judithevans001@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: From: Judith Evans <judithevans001@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [lit-ideas] Re: Muslim Prejudice (Judy?) The one I liked the best was the man who said that she ought not to have spoken about anti-Muslim prejudice. Given her position, she ought to have spoken out about how one of the causes of prejudice against Muslims is their refusal to except Western secular values. His contention, familiar to us all, that we all accept people making fun of, and disrespecting the religion of, anyone and everyone. Muslims generally won't accept this. The performer M&M was to perform in Detroit a few years ago. Because of the vulgarity, the city forbid it. He sued, won and the city had to pay $300,000 restitution. The reaction of a very moderate imam of a mosque near Detroit was: the show is shameful, the city out to have prohibited it and no fine ought to have been levied. Currently, there is a concern in Western countries that some Muslims are taking daughters to the home country for circumcision and early marriage. I have read about this issue being of concern in the U.S. and Canada Veronica ----- Original Message ----- From: Judith Evans To: lit-ideas@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Thursday, January 20, 2011 12:42 PM Subject: [lit-ideas] Re: Muslim Prejudice (Judy?) I haven't read the speech, I did know about it. "Baroness Warsi will say anti-Muslim prejudice is now seen by many Britons as normal and uncontroversial" I'd say there's a lot of truth in this, I'd also say Sayeeda Warsi is not likely to exaggerate the extent and degree of prejudice. Just one thing "She told the 2009 Conservative Party conference that anti-Muslim hatred had become Britain's last socially acceptable form of bigotry" There's another one, anti-gypsy prejudice. I have no idea how all this compares with the US btw sorry distracted by some terrific breaking news, the Labour Shadow Chancellor's resigned and Ed Balls, who should have got the job in the first place, is taking over. Prepare to see Tory ministers dismembered!!!!
