Yes, some good lines but not very good overall. It is
simply nihilistic comment on romantic commedies and as
such even more shallow than most of those. Or as
someone said about Frank Zappa's Bobby Brown, I get
the joke but it is just not that funny.
The genre, broadly speaking, is very popular with
European film makers as it has popular appeal and
offers possibilities for interesting characters. (I
blame the Brits, Four Weddings and so on.) So
naturally I was somewhat suspicious when wifey thing
had me fetch something called Producing Adults, but it
is actually really good.
Finns, like Swedes, have been doing films about
relationships of thirty something for last couple
years, and while the acting and directing are usually
good, scripts leave something to desire. However
Producing Adults is an exception. The main characters
are a psychologist counceling would be parents at a
fertility clinic, her boy friend who is strugling
between wanting to be the perfect boy friend and not
wanting kids, and a doctor at the clinic strugling
with her sexual identity. Much to my suprise this
makes for a compelling story due to fairly minimalist
performance that leaves a lot for the spectator to
figure out.
The translation (subtitles) is apperantly pretty bad,
esspecially because someone once again deciced that
American audience can't handle profanities. (See
Fucking Åmahl, original Swedish title, aka Show Me
Love!? Very good film too, btw.)
Cheers,
