Donal: Incidentally, Karl was the runaway winner of the BBC greatest philosopher poll. What does that tell you?

Eric: Either that most Beebliophiles believe that economics is the primary determinant of history or that Plato's republic never had nuclear weapons trained on their cities for decades.

Couldn't figure out what would make a philosopher "the greatest." Influence? Has Plato (Christianity) or Aristotle (science) had more influence? Relevance? Was Marx, Nietzsche, or Kierkegaard more relevant? Then, some of the choices were just plain odd. Bertrand Russell for example.
