this piece is fairly interesting

" Oren’s book implicitly if not explicitly identifies a key
reason for America’s difficulties: its enduring cultural contempt
for Islam. Underlying US personal attitudes and national policy
has been a conviction that Arabs should aspire to a future based
upon learning to be like us, as Israelis are. By contrast, most
students of the Middle East believe the West can prosper in its
relationships only by working through local cultures, however
primitive, flawed or apparently foolish, rather than by using
Washington’s remote box to fast-forward change among Iraqis,
Afghans, Iranians. It is also essential to keep talking. Sending
Iran to Coventry is a gesture appropriate to a schoolboy, not to
the president of the world’s only superpower."
