Eric, from Fowler's Modern English Usage, 2nd edn:
The use of "me" in colloquialisms such as "It's me" and "it wasn't me"
is perhaps the only successful attack made by "me" on "I."
This nicely illustrates Paul Stone's point that quotation marks make all
the difference. I mean, what if I were to attack me?
