It turns out that the huge mystery vessel that turned up on Stinky Bay Beach in
the Western Isles on Dec. 29 was not a pod of extraterrestrials as I had
fervently hoped, but a beer fermentation tank. That it's loss had gone
unreported for two days is not surprising. Either the ship's sailors had
jettisoned it after drinking all the beer and considered it litter, not loss;
or that having emptied it's contents into themselves, didn't know for two days
that it was missing. Either version makes sense. What doesn't make sense is
that the container belonged to Coors Brewery. What in God's name would an
American beer manufacturer be doing plying European beer waters? Who would
allow such a thing? And assuming my scenarios are correct, what sailor in his
right mind would be so desperate as to drink Coors? Sea water is preferable.
There's the real mystery.
