My 17 yr old High School Junior told me this evening that in English today
they were reading an essay (she didn't say by whom) that was something of a
discourse on the difference between application learning and analytic
learning. The essay was an exposition on living learning vs. vicarious
learning, the assertion that human creatures do not seem to learn from
others' experiences or words, etc. There was in-class reading aloud and
discussion, etc. I'm not summarizing very well, but you get the idea.
Bronwyn is normally a very self-contained, self-controlled,
appropriately-behaved young woman. However, she tells me, (her voice
climbing in register and decibel), she couldn't stand the *irony*
(MO-OM...) and closed her book, stood up, and threw it on the floor. After
a moment of class silence, the teacher told her she had earned 10 extra
points for the day, and then asked her politely to retrieve the book and
take her seat again.
I referred Bronnie to Dead Poet's Society.
