Fanciulla del West would have been  _great_.

I'm less sure about all-American opera though.

I'm only  familiar with _one_ American opera: Porgy and Bess.

But this,

Apparently by decree Gershwin does prohibit to stage "Porgy and  Bess" by 
non-African-Americans. 

The Elgin Opera House tried, and got the  telegramme that Geary will quote.
