I said last night that Gore Vidal cried regarding Lincoln. He got visibly
choked up as he said the words. I used the word cried in an effort at
succinctness, since it's on the same continuum. I was surprised that Vidal got
emotional, though. People who write biographies often wind up hating their
subject. Clearly Vidal learned to love Lincoln. I came away with the distinct
impression that Lincoln committed suicide. He had a death wish and he allowed
it to be fulfilled that night.
