. . . ." These were the tyrants of my formidable years. How could you block that out?

About 5 years ago I ran into a student I had early in my teaching career. I'm terrible on names, but sometimes the early students are easier to remember than the later ones. Anyway, I said "Hi, Sandy, right?" I was so proud to think that she would see how memorable she had been, even though it had been 5 years before when she was a student. "Ahh, were you one of my teachers at Triton...." came the reply. She still wasn't quite sure who I was; I said "Sure" and moved on. Whenever I think I'm making a "large" difference in students' lives I always remember this story.
