 The FACT is we're all proverbial blind men feeling an elephant.

A.A. To the extent that virtually no one knows why they do what they do and 
feel what they feel and want what they want, I agree.  A  lot of that is 
willful ignorance.  People prefer to believe than to know.  The elephant in the 
living room that everyone pretends isn't there is a more appropriate analogy in 
my opinion.
