It's *that* time of year again. Daughter number two has applied to
colleges and the responses are trickling in. Some time next month
we'll all have to decide which one she'll attend. This is a tough
decision, involving many variables. I have, however, thought of a
question that helps. I share it in case any of you is also in this
situation. The magic question is: which set of bureaucrats would you
like to deal with during the next four years?
On Thursday I sent each college that J. had applied to notification
that I have been awarded a sabbatical next year and thus will only
receive half my usual salary. I signed it David Ritchie, Professor
of History, PNCA. Below are responses from the financial aid offices
of several of the colleges in question. Identifying marks have been
removed:

When J. is accepted and decides to enroll at M., please provide us
with an updated
financial summary for your family. This will be taken into
consideration when a Final Financial
Aid Package is created for her.
Dear Dr. Ritchie,
Thanks for your note and congratulations on receiving your sabbatical.
May I suggest that you complete the enclosed Parent Income Update
form so we can have a better understanding of 2009 income status?
Best,

Hello Mr. Ritchie,
Thank you for notifying us. I will include your email in our file
for review.
We did receive the FAFSA application. However, we have not received the
O. Supplemental Application. I've attached the form. Please complete
the form and return it to our office as soon as possible. The form must
be completed and signed by both parent and student. We also need a copy
of 2008 W-2s and signed tax returns (schedules included) for you and
... (if she is filing).
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
Have a nice weekend.
