[lit-ideas] How the West Could Lose

The above is the Daniel Pipes article that Podhoretz referred to. Lit-Ideas
Leftists in their usual fashion have attempted to quibble, sneer, and scoff
its importance away, but the matter is serious, and it ought to be obvious
that the number of committed Jihadists is much much greater than the number
of committed Communists. The number of Communists in Russia was always
small relative to the population. Lenin advocated a "vanguard," a small
group of politically aware leaders who would guide the proletariat into a
Communist workers paradise. The Communists managed all they did with
relatively small numbers. How much greater will be the influence of the
Islamists who comprise a much greater percentage of the Islamic population?

Information on the "precise . . . membership figures" as Walter Hanchett
writes (see
http://links.jstor.org/sici?sici=0003-0554(195812)52%3A4%3C1123%3ASOOMFO%3E2
.0.CO%3B2-9), is difficult, but that isn't important to us. An indication
of the population in a representative year is enough to show that the
percentage of Communists in the Soviet Union was well below 1%. And that is
1% of about 180,000,000 in 1956, and the USSR only got to an "estimated 293
million in 1991, which is far less than the 1.5 Billion Muslims out of which
the smallest percentage estimate I've seen of committed Jihadists is 10%. 8
million Communists in the USSR in 1956, so let's extrapolate and say 16
million in 1991; which is probably high, versus Pipe's minimum of
125,000,000 Jihadists in the world today. Did the number of Communists go
proportionately up or not? Was there a great enthusiastic fanatical
increase in devotion to the Communist Party in the period from 1956 to 1991,
right before it collapsed? I really don't think so.

Another thing to consider is that the second generation Communists were not
as committed as the first generation. We are well into the second
generation of Jihadists and their fervor seems on the increase.

As to Fascist Party Membership: Here is an interesting site:
http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/GERnazi.htm In this one we see that
membership in the Nazi Part grew from "from 27,000 in 1925 to 108,000 in
1928."

Not just anyone could join the Nazi Party: You have to meet stringent
requirements; which would perforce have kept the numbers down:
http://web.jjay.cuny.edu/~jobrien/reference/ob79.html

Here is the data on an individual who was given the Nazi Party number
773,583 in 1931: http://www.usmbooks.com/nsdap_mitgliedsbuch.html

Oscar Schindler joined the Nazi Party in 1939: His Nazi Party number was
6,421,477.
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/When_did_Oskar_Schindler_join_the_Nazi_party

I won't bother with Italy or Spain. There is no reason to suspect that the
numbers aren't equally small.

But the point Pipes makes and the point I reiterate is that the number of
committed Islamists is much larger than the committed Fascists and
Communists of earlier periods, and we know who much trouble they caused.
The Jihadists, the Islamofascists have already been brain washed. They
needed no Joseph Goebbels to do that for them. Their adherence to bizarre
conspiracy theories involving America and Israel is legendary.

Lit-Ideas Leftists make light of the Islamofascist threat. There are no
crocs in the rivers or alligators in the swamps and such people as Pipes and
Helm are alarmists who can't answer the silly obfuscatory quibbles of
Leftist avoidance. Well, that isn't true. All the facts point one way:
and that is the way that Leftists refuse to look.
