from Slate: "Christmas Communion Wafers at a Long Island Church May Have Contained Hepatitis A Parishioners who ate one of the traditional wafers at the Christmas Mass at Lady of Lourdes Church in New York may be at risk for Hepatitis A. The wafers, a customary part of the communion ceremony, are believed to contain the body of Jesus Christ. Unfortunately, health officials say they may have also contained strains of the liver disease, which is contracted by ingesting something contaminated with fecal matter. So who's behind the potential outbreak? It was probably an infected church leader who handled the wafers. Luckily, no one has reported an infection yet, but MaryEllen Laurain, a spokesperson for the Nassau County Department of Health, says vaccines will be offered as a preventative measure. The diocese's website, meanwhile, states that "We pray that no one comes down with this virus." Mike Geary Memphis
