And I _was_ Army! Drafted! So I _know_ what I'm talking about. Anyway, I try to re-imagine the context in terms, for the sake of it, H. P. Grice and Oxford. I was saying that the 'hero' is a dead hero. There seems to be an understanding (I notice in some tv. commercials too) that the hero is a dead hero. Imagine Grice -- drafted to the Navy in 1939. Fresh from a first in Classics. Oxford closed for the duration! Then imagine 1945 -- they all back to play! --- But there possibly _was_ a sentiment (that luckily he endured) that people who had gone to the front (and he just spent a week on the North-Atlantic (well, ...) Most of his time, fortunately, was at Admiralty House) _should_ have stayed there?! I don't know! I think it was a way to face the conflict. In fact S. Ward reminisced very well on this in a polemic with L. Helm. Ward mentions that talking of just Great War: every person in Walkhampton had lost at least a father or a son (or both -- I add). Anyway, I'm not even sure how the concept of 'hero' worked in Greek, anyway. What I do know is that there was an Argentine opera called Gli Eroi if you can believe that!
