Maybe it's worth discussing the distinction between private meaning and 
public meaning? Aren't we really glossing a spectrum of meaning when we 
use the word meaning? Maybe only "societal" meaning is necessarily 

private meaning
meaning between two people
meaning among a small group of people
societal meaning
