I'm glad that Dylan finally stepped down from his throne to accept the award.
I've tried to piece together some justificatory argument that might put at
rest my irritation over his obdurate position.>
This is the guy who, when getting the Emergency Civil Liberties Committee's
annual Tom Paine Award for his contribution to the fight for civil liberties,
got drunk and made a speech expressing sympathy for Lee Harvey Oswald. The man
who, just three weeks previous, had, in the eyes of most of those present,
killed John F. Kennedy.
This is the guy who was the last headline act at the first Live Aid, turned up
drunk with two stoned Stones, shambolically played a few barely recognisable
songs, and then made a slurred speech asking why a few millions couldn't be
given to farmers in the mid-West. Until then few suspected mid-West farmers
might be starving to death.

This is the guy to turned up medicated to collect his Grammy Lifetime
Achievement Award, was introduced by Jack Nicholson as if he was Shakespeare
and Jeremiah rolled in one, then made a speech about how his father taught him,
when Bob was a child, that you can become so defiled in this world that even
your parents turn their back on you but never forget that God never will.
Tuxedoed stars felt canapes become guano in their mouths.*

This is the guy who directed "Renaldo and Clara". This is the guy who ensured
the director of "Hearts On Fire" was, like him, a one-time director who never
directed again. This is the guy. That guy. The very guy.

The highest honour Bob Dylan could pay the Nobel Committee is to stay as far
away as possible and not make a speech. I think he was trying. But some people
wouldn't let it go.

Frankly, I'm worried now. He's sending a speech.
DL*(Actually, that was a good one, Bob.)Who may need to check his facts
