[lit-ideas] Re: Does Diet Affect Propensity to Violence

Donal's list was actions that occurred some 70 years ago. 70 years ago, the Japanese didn't eat that much fish. It was a rare luxury. Most Japanese got by with poor nutrition. (The Japanese recognize the importance of national nutrition, which is why their parliment is called the Diet.)

The article is plausible, but useless. The White House isn't going to spend a flat nickel on nutrition for kids, when they can waste the money in Iraq. Bush asked today for another $50 billion for Iraq.

While tending to think the substance of the article is both interesting and
plausible [based on very intense personal things like hangovers, for
example], there is a flippant and facetious point to be made [and this
without bringing John's current situation into it]:
the japanese may eat loads of fish but re depression what about
hari-kiri,kamikaze,hollywood
actors-doing-ads-they-would-be-embarrassed-for-us-see-if-we-weren't-lost-in-translation
and re violence what about war-against-China, Iwo-Jima, and world war in
general.

Interesting story at

If better diet reduces propensity to violence, what is the effect of poor
diet?

Just think of the possible hypotheses:

Does poor diet in third-world countries contribute (along with, for
example, a large proportion of young males in the population) to
endemic violence?

What about Red State America? Especially in places where deep-fried
Twinkies are more likely to be consumed that Omega-3-rich fish oil?

Are fast-food-nation diets linked to the popularity of violent video games?

Thoughts, anyone?

John
