as "third world" will have lower levels of personal
violence than the US, I think.

It's wrong to speak of Brasil as third-world, as it will soon surpass the US in food production and is the economic center of Latin America. Nevertheless it does have some third-world qualities, and the violence there is terrible.

The Folho of Sao Paulo ran an article after Bush's "mission accomplished" speech.

*More people had died of street violence in Sao Paulo than had died on both sides of the invasion of Iraq during the same time period.

*More people have died of street violence in Sao Paulo than have died in the Intafada, during the time period of the Intafada.

Depends which violence you privilege, I guess.
