The cartoon issue is confused because there are several items that aren't the 
real issue.

The cartoons are offensive. Well, no. The cartoons were not meant as an offense. Danes were illustrating that Islam meant to themselves.

Muhammed as a terrorist. In that particular cartoon, Muhammed is an illustration for all Arabs. The artist saw Islam itself as a threat.

It's not about the offense. Suppose a European newspaper commissioned a painting that shows Mohammed receiving Koran from the archangel. It's done respectfully and tastefully. It's a commemoration of a significant event.

That would enrage the Muslims even more. They don't want any depiction of Mohammed whatsover. They want to tell us what we can't think.
