Wow! Me a pacifist?
In the real world, unfortunately, Convert or Die! is only practiced by
Islamists. That parody piece I sent some weeks ago about Tom Ridge
converting to Islam and the muezzin atop the Washington Monument was
based on a real al-Qaeda press statement from 2002 that people in the
West should convert to Islam or die. And that is the orthodox practice
that was used on the Fox News guys captured in Palestine recently --
they were given a chance to convert or to die.
Unlike other world religions, Islam is the only respected major religion
in which fundamentalism is mainstream. Few Buddhists are in the small
boat; few Christians are snake handlers; few Jews are the
ultra-orthodox. But in Islam, fundamentalism rules. Hence the quest for
moderate voices in a sea of jihad.
