It seemed odd to me that the weapon with which said fellow wanted to defend himself was no mighty manly thing, but a Derringer, something I had till that point thought of as a ladies' gun, suitable for shooting off in the tight space of say, a stage coach. Lawrence will know whether you can hit anything with a Derringer at ranges of more than several inches. I don't. "What kind of defending was he intending?" is what passed through my mind, "and where?"
