I left some loose ends which people off-list have urged me to tie up.
Fritchie is probably of German origin, anglicized Frietsche or
something of that ilk, though a genealogy page says there are Irish
Fritchies. I failed to mention the Barbara Fritchie restaurant's
website. I pass it along without comment, save to say that you can
get the pledge of allegiance there, plus a list of famous Frederick
County Personalities, which includes, in addition to many people
you've heard of, Rear Admiral Winfred Scott Schley, suppressor of the
Chinese insurrection on the Chincha Islands, protector of American
interests during a revolution in San Salvador, adjutant of land
forces in the attack on Korean forts on the Salee River and
participant in the battle of Gangwha. After he inspected lighthouses
and rescued Greely from the Arctic Schley got into the defining fight
of his life with... (U.S.) Acting Rear Admiral Sampson. A Spanish
squadron was also involved. (See Wikipedia or some long history
American naval adventure for fuller details.) He won at least the
publicity battle, and is thus at least a local hero.
I called Amazon this morning, trying to get a gift card to function
as it should. Thick accent, "Please tell me the name on the account."
"David Ritchie."
"And your e mail address?"
"Ritchierd@xxxxxxxxxxxxx"
"Well Richard, how may I be of assistance?"
Don't keep calling me Richard.

Portland, Oregon
