Robert: I was myself originally reacting to Paul Stone's
notion that large, powerful dogs could not be trained by old
guys and women because with such a dog one had to 'kick ass'
in order to train or control it, and that in order to kick
ass one had to be physically stronger than the dog.
You were first responding to my comment that, "The actual
owner of a dog does have to establish an 'alpha'
relationship with the dog. That's why LH's engineer
acquaintance had to give up his guard dog: the man was too
old to effectively dominate a large and aggressive dog."
Think about what's involved. Unless you can control the
leash, you can't control the dog. Lawrence wrote that his
friend was being pulled all over the place by the dog.
