Mr Kipling is a brand name. 'His' cakes are typically small, particularly sweet and are directed towards the lower end of the market. Adverts usually close with the line, '...but he does makes exceedingly good cakes' usually following a Victorianesque pastiche. This despite the fact that the brand was launched in 1967.

I can well imagine down-to-earth Iris insisting on serving Mr Kipling Cakes.

Incidentally, you should read John Bailey's Iris books - subjective, compassionate and beautiful.

From Peter Conradi's Iris: The Life of Iris Murdoch: '…and consisted of each guest's being awarded, from off a huge tray, a single Mr Kipling cake.'

One of the enormously many expressions whose referents I don't know is 'Mr Kipling cake.'
