Bilger and Unthank, would that be a good name for a law firm? Or a railroad?

DeNorval Unthank (1899-1977) was the first black physician in Portland, and probably the first black physician in Oregon. He endured
a lot and did a lot.

I knew his son, DeNorval Unthank, Jr. (?De?) as an undergraduate at the University of Oregon. De, who died in 2000 was an architecture student when
I knew him; he practiced architecture in Eugene, until his retirement.

In 1951 De married a white undergraduate, Debbie Burgess. They were married in Washington because Oregon still had an anti-miscegenation law. Their marriage was a local scandal and became a national news story. Debbie, now Debbie Mohr, still lives in Eugene.

This link to a Steve Duin Oregonian column comes up in ready-to-print format for some Oregonianish reason.
