I think the point about the controversy is that she belongs to a party that advocates strict immigration controls, and as such having fooled the system herself is very problematic. For comparison, what would happen if a hard-line anti-immigration senator turned out to be an illegal immigrant himself? Going to States is, all things considered, probably good for her. The thing that troubles me is that she is a valuable contributor to the discussion and joining AEI pretty much destroyed any credibility she has on this side of the pond.
