Rockefeller commissioned Rivera, presumably because he found his art beautiful. It was the political statements Rivera embedded in the murals that upset Rockefeller. He wanted Rivera to paint them out and over. Rivera refused. The murals were stored away somewhere, I think.
Alas, they weren't. They were physically destroyed at the site.
