Long ago I was working on variations to the Schiller Ode. Here's a
throwaway from the throwaway pile.
Fifth Variation
(Military Version)
Hey Sparks, you’re a joy-god,
Lovely whelp of Elysium,
Aware we stumble, pants on fire,
Scraping ashes from our tombs.
Hocus pocus gave us rifles.
Patiently, we wait in line.
All of us get paid vacations
Where the weather’s always fine.
Hocus pocus makes us focus
Will the world to stay in line.
Imagine people are all sunspots,
Wild motion on the sun’s design,
Thinking, feeling—what we do here,
Following rules for peace of mind
Okay now, stop that thinking,
no more sunspots bring to mind
Instead imagine we’re all soldiers,
And leave the sunspots undefined.
Instead imagine we’re all soldiers,
And leave the sunspots undefined.
Though we’re feigning it’s still training,
Baritone barks, apprentice Sarge,
Noting all the crowd-stained angels,
Looms particularly green and large.
Lack of focus made them poke us.
Patiently, we wait in line.
Everyone earns free vacations
And the weather’s always fine.
Hocus pocus made us gadgets
When the weather’s always fine.
