Most of the professional philosophers who grace my home and office are hardly
poor. They're not rich, mind you, and certainly not wealthy, but they get their
kids through to a Masters degree, drive nice vehicles, travel to Paris or Prague
or London periodically, are able to maintain a reasonably well-stocked wine
vault and have opportunities to partake of a single malt or two on special
occasions.
On a different sense of "poor," I would say that none of us are poor in virtue
of being "misunderstood." The poverty rather rests amongst those who fail to
take steps to understand the world, themselves and others from a philosophical
perspective. Philosophy will thrive so long as universities thrive. And
universities will thrive so long as liberal democracties thrive. And we are all
democrats in the end, surely.
