People off-list have proposed a number of explanations, one among
which I find quite plausible. The first was that the waitress heard
my accent and mis-used the only slang English term she knew.
Unlikely. The second explanation, from someone who has contacts in
the restaurant trade and who checked to see if there was such a brand
of machine, is that the waitress was being slyly insulting. I don't
think so. The third and plausible explanation came from someone who
says he uses "wanker" as a synonym for "doomaflitchy,
whatchamacallit, watzit or widget."
'strawdinry.
