Hey Andy- wish I was there for Oktoberfest, I'm pretty tired of Mexican
food
actually.
Octoberfests are held at numerous ethnic clubs around the city-usually in
Sept (go figure-- guess its to cold for the chicago crowd) But if you really
want to do some serious partying you should come up for the 11 days before
the fourth of July for Summerfest. Its held on the lakefront and is booked
as one of the biggest music festivals in the country catering to all tastes
on 10 or more stages. Plenty of brew, great food, music, friendly people and
photo ops galore. No need the be real covert here as most are more than
willing to pose or don't care or realize if you pop off a couple of candids.
After summerfest we have the ethnic festivals (Italian, German, Polish,
Irish and a few others) on the same grounds. Same deal on the beer food and
people. Every other Fourth of July we have the "Great Circus Parade". They
ship in the old horse drawn circus wagons from Circus World Museum in
Baraboo Wi and horse teams from all over the country and parade them on a
six mile route through downtown MKE. Just like the circus parades of the
early 19 century. Very colorful and great photo ops. One of these years I'll
have to stick around town and grab some more shots
I bet you could get some great shots, if you used a good TLR (my favorite
hands down, Minolta Autocord) with some Ilford 3200 film, allowing you to
set the camera for a large DOF at about f/11 or above, prefocussed at 10or
12 feet, hang it off your shoulder and just casually frame with the waist
level finder. while you are looking away or scratching your butt or
otherwise seeming not to be taking their photo. No one wants to be hit on
the head with a beer stein.
Nikon F outfit with a WLF and a 35mm f/1.4 F lens pretty
cheap, no one is buying this generation gear anymore as even the F2 and F3
is dirt cheap. But I really have to squint to see that tiny groundglass at
waist level!
Tell me about it I've got two F's laying in a drawer that I won't part with
because the price is to low
