In Southern BC, we have a well known salmon run called the Adams River Salmon
Salmon Run. Although the number of salmon returns has dropped precipitously,
this run survives, more accidentally than due to any clairvoyant government
policies.
I'm fond of visiting a less known tributary of the Adams River where the
spawning conditions are ideal and where the environment is purely magical. On
this occasion, I searched high and low for a decomposed salmon corpse to
photograph. I shot this this with a Linhoff Technika 3 with a 150mm Apo-Ronar
f9 lens. Tripod? Naturally. I made several prints and worked hard with
potassium ferricianide to enhance the highlites. (it's easy to spoil prints
when doing this)
When I wanted to hang the print on the living room wall, my wife exclaimed
"Dead fish in our living room??? No way." But, to me it isn't "dead fish", it's
a representation of the mystical circle of life.
Whether you like it or not may depend on whether you are a "dead fish" person
or a mystic.
