[LRflex] Re: new to DMR

Congratulations Doug and welcome to the club.

What I can offer is some solid experience with the DMR (I have carried the baby
for 10 months now). My recommendations:

- For best results shoot only RAW. You will need a lot of portable storage,:

- 1 or 2 GB SD-Cards (Sandisk are the recommended brand, but there are others -
some brands do NOT work, though - look it up in Fred Miranda). 1GB cards store
some 45 RAW shots.

- a portable battery-driven hard disk storage. You will need less SD-cards. This
may be more economical depending on how many shots you make per day

- About white balance: most of the time - whatever many people say - the auto WB
of the DMR is fine and can be easily corrected in the RAW converter

- Spare camera batteries carried near your body to keep them warm in winter.
One battery good for about 60-100 RAW shots, depending on temperature.

- Do not use Adobe ACR. The best RAW converters in my experience are Capture
One and SilkyPix Developer Studio 2.0. Both can be downloaded for a free trial
period. The SilkyPix converter will continue to run with the essential features
working even after 30 days. Only some seldom-used features stop working and you
get a reminder to buy the license. Great for an in depth trial. Use Adobe for
post-processing once the RAW files have been converted to TIFF ("developed" in
SilkyPix language) for printing or if they need cropping, resizing and other
adjustments.

- As others have pointed out, there are two great fora with a lot of information
and knowledgeable users ready to provide answers and help for the DMR, the Leica
Factory Digital Forum and the Fred Miranda Forum.

Last but not least, do not be shy to ask me, I shall be glad to help wherever I
can.

Best wishes for a lot of success with this wonderful tool
Peter
