That's correct Doug : the camera (R4) will not work without the winder 
batteries in place, even if batteries are installed in the camera.The 
culprit is the contact located under the lensbox : there is a pusher pin on 
the winder, that pushes that spring-loaded contact back home. So the only 
way to use your winder handle would be to remove that pin. BTW the two other 
pins at both ends of the winder are just there for positioning and don't 
play any electrical role.
One more hint to Philippe : if you pull the cocking lever backwards +/- 60 
degrees, the winder will not operate after you have shot the frame.Put the 
cocking lever back in place and the winder will advance the film to the next 
frame and recock the shutter.
