David Young Dear David (and others) I hope not annoying anybody to bring in
this probally old topic, but I'm also very interested in R glass on my 5dII (I
more or less abandon the idea of buying a second hand DMR; IF you find one they
are rather expensive and I'm a bit worried about replacing batteries and so.
And the cropfactor is something that is not very appealing for the way I work.
(I would still needing the 5d....) I read a lot of threads and posts about this
subject, but get different opinions ( same thing can happen now again....) -I
think there's a lot of choice about the adapter-mayby that is the most easy
part of my question. -What is the change of getting problems with backfocus and
infinty. -What about the exposure meter in the 5dII ? Does it work well not
getting any EXIF information? -What about changing screen for better focussing?
(Brightscreen??) No problems with exposure and/or backfocus? If any of you are
using a 5dII with R glass please tell me which combination works perfect for
you. And ofcourse there are the mirrorproblems of the 5d. I really would like
to use the 19 mm, but on Pebbleplace I read that the latest version cannot be
used, but the 11225 does fit. If anyone has a good advice, I'll be more then
happy!! (BTW; he R5 will be used most of the time!!) Herman Kempers

Douglas,

Thank you very much; it is very interesting to me and I will see what more I
can find.

My brother-in-law, who lives in Sacramento, Calif. worked with the Sacramento
German Genealogy Society and they helped him locate his relatives in Westphalia
via the German telephone directory.  Members of his family, the Niemiers and
Rustiges, still live close by the towns from which his immigrant ancestors
departed, Anrochte and Effeln, in what was then Prussia.

When they arrived over here, they went to a large colony of German immigrants
on the Ohio River in Evansville, Indiana to farm. How they knew where to go I
haven't discovered.

Franz Christian Rustige, who came as an infant, became Frank Christian Rusting,
and later married Maria Niemier Kirchoff, and they became the parents of my
late wife's grandmother, whom I met before she died in 1957.

My son Ian married into a family in which one of the various mothers-in-law is
a native German and, without telling her why, he asked her what the meaning of
"rustige" was and she replied right away, "rusting." Then he told her it was
his grandmother's maiden name and they had a good laugh.

My ancestors were all English; my mother's family arriving with the Mayflower
and my father's ancestors later, but I don't know when or where, only that my
great=grandfather was born in Connecticut of an English-born mother and a
Yankee father in 1830.

All the best,

Bill

Dear Doug, I really enjoyed your pictures. You did very well keeping those
lines from converging. I was surprised at the few people on some pictures as I
was there in June this year for the wedding of my niece. Then I read the
temperature. I love all the Hanseatic League locations with my favorite being
Bergen, Norway. My major reason for not moving there tomorrow is the lack of
mountains. Not a one in hundreds of kms. I guess I will stay in Korea, we have
more than enough!! I plan to start sharing some with the list soon. Sincerely,
George

Hi Douglas,
most work, and work well

I may be fussy, but I found some issues with horizontals/verticals,
notably in the photo of the main square.

Looks like a nice place to visit, probably better in the Spring ?

Thanks for sharing the atmmosphere and views

Douglas,

Great pictures. I've never been to Bremen (or Hamburg), where my
father's maternal relatives hailed from--among other places--over a
hundred years ago.

Well, the weather cooled down even further and yesterday I had to trudge
through the ice and snow to get some cat food - Madame Posy is a
talkative cat and lets you know when she's hungry - and we'd run out of
milk too.
The walk along the canal is usually pleasant enough, but with a
windchill factor taking tempertures  down to -30° or so, it's not much fun.

At least the sun on the frozen canal looked quite pretty

http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/DMS/Germany/Hannover/_MG_0672.jpg.html

but it was much too cold to sit and enjoy the view

http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/DMS/Germany/Hannover/_MG_0673.jpg.html

the seagulls patrol the canal near the bridge waiting for people to
throw them some bread

http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/DMS/Germany/Hannover/_MG_0681.jpg.html

the icebreaker had been through the branch canal while I was in the
supermarket, but the floes were already freezing over within minutes

http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/DMS/Germany/Hannover/_MG_0684.jpg.html

On the way home, the sun peeped through the clouds for a moment and
shone on the new housing development

http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/DMS/Germany/Hannover/_MG_0685.jpg.html

Back at home it was really good to be back where it's warm and cosy
(this was actually shot on New year's Day, but the kitchen hasn't changed)

http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/DMS/Germany/Hannover/_MG_0604.jpg.html

Today the temperature rose to +4°C and it rained, so I took shelterin
our local photo dealer's shop and blew nearly 200 euros on an almost
mint Pentax MX, a pristine Canon A1, a whole bunch of lenses and motor
drives for both.

Today was a good day after all :-)

Cheers
Douglas

Philippe,

using a 12mm lens always has its problems - if you go back a page you
can see what Bremen looks like in April, then I had even more problems
with verticals trying to shoot the cathedral. Being a very old city,
even a 21 mm is much too long for showing the place.

Great place to visit, particularly the centre, the old city wall, moat
and park (where the mill is), the Schnoor quarter, Böttchergasse (art
nouveau) and you can take a nice trip on the river Weser too. Beer is
excellent (Beck's of course - and Haake-Beck, which is even better),
loads of good and reasonably priced restaurants too.

Cheers
Douglas

Jeff,
both cities are well worth a visit - the cosmopolitan Hanseatic spirit
lives on.

Bremen, and Bremerhaven, just up the river Weser towards the North Sea,
were centres where emigrants gathered in their thousands to flee
oppression, poverty, famine and war in Europe to find a better life at
the other side of the world.

Cheers and thanks for taking a look
Douglas

All:
This morning I received an email from Ahmed Mokhtar... an "R" user,
based in Egypt.  Along with his questions about using his "R" glass
on a Canon 5D Mk II, he sent a link to some of his work.

<http://www.lightstalkers.org/galleries/slideshow/15392>click here to
ahmed mokhtar's photographs slideshow

Looking at Ahmed's photographs should be required for every member of
this list.  They are all b&w; and range from the starkly beautiful to
the incredibly powerful.

His is a slideshow presentation and in just the time it takes to play
one, hauntingly beautiful, piece of music, his group of 40 photos
will cycle through, twice.

Please take the time to look.

Thanks, Dave. His work is beautiful. I notice that he uses grain, or simulated
"digi-grain" to create a nice effect in the dune shots. i was going to ask
whether he was using Delta 3200 but, alas, since he was using a digital camera,
the grain must have been achieved with a Photoshop filter or a similar piece of
software.

Certainly one of the benefits of the Reflex group is all the leads for
outstanding photographic work that we probably wouldn't find otherwise.
I've never seen better than these. David

Hello David,

Personally I prefer this sort of thing on fine grain B&W film taken
with an M camera and M lenses. Perhaps you may enjoy these
from a Leica friend in the Cape Verde Islands. Matter of taste,
I realize.

Not sure how he does it, Dave... but he tells me he's mostly using
his "dinausoric Leicas " with film.

Obviously, he's now thinking of getting into digital, which is how he
came to contact me about using his R glass on the Canon 5DII which
he's thinking of purchasing.

I hope he joins ... he seems a delightful chap and, obviously, a fine
photographer.

Cheers!

Personal taste, to be sure.  While these are nice, I think Ahmad's photos
are much more powerful than this set, fine grain or no.

Douglas,

You forgot to add, "And we all lived happily ever after." :)

It is a nice story that is told by pictures, supported by the text, as opposed
to the other way around. But I kept wondering about Posy; did she get fed? I
hope so!

In the end: I enjoyed it very much, especially the bench and gull shots.

Mr Mokhtar images are overall sensational...I am very impressed by the power
they have.

I believe he is using R film, perhaps thinking of mounting R lenses on a Canon
digital camera...
