Re: Amorous Avocets
Hello David
The photograph itself is quite sharp, and I think that the scanning may not
have been wonderful, because it's heavily cropped. Their activities were in
very short bursts of perhaps 2 seconds, so I had to point the lens at
something like the right place and hope - and it came off, but they were
highup in the frame. It was shot with the 500 Paragon, at about f16 - which
also means that any bird movement was unlikely to be frozen with 200 ASA
film.

I would have liked a better shot of the lapwing shooing them off; he did it
three times, and I photographed each one. If only I could have got over the
other side of the water!

Pensthorpe is a lovely place to go. It is a series of shallow (some not so
shallow!!) old gravel pits, which have flooded due to the proximity of the
River Wensum, and they form a marvellous haven for migrating water birds.
Some very rare ducks turn up there, especially Siberian ones.

Later in the year, I will return there and take some more pics. The
bluebells will be out in the woods next month, so that will be an excellent
time to go.

Thanks for comments.....any more comments, Reflexers?
Regards
Keith Longmore
PS - David - my cousin could see all the pics on Yahoo, no problem. On LUG,
he can only see thumbnails, except for the last one on each row!! Isn't
software just wonderful...?

your shots without having to fight with the Yahoo "invitation"! :-) I like
your "Amorous Avocets", though I suspect it might work better as a vertical
composition. One problem, however, is that I cannot find the plane of focus
in the shot. The birds seem a wee bit out of focus. What f-stop were you
using? >I plan to take the IIIb with me to Crete at the end of May. Great
