Hi Art,
On some Leica lenses the 280 2.8, the 400 2.8 and I'm sure one of the 180mm
the 1.4 goes on first because there is room for the extended lens portion to
fit right inside teh prime lens.

There are other Leica lenses the 1.4 xtdr wont fit because of the front lens
protruding. However the 2X seems to fit most other lenses. Not sure which
ones, I believe the 80-200 f4.0 zoom wont take either of the extenders.
Generally if I'm going to try anything new, I just put them together very
gently and if they lock together without any pressure, then it's cool. Lock
on and look through the viewfinder for sometimes the scene of your life with
a lens you never thought could do what it's doing.;-)

So far my method of doing things like this has never landed me in the test
bench jail house nor have I jammed or broken anything.

But if you don't try on your own and always completely rely on the Leica
test bench folks you'll never discover the many wonderful secrets of Leica
glass.

In most cases primes out perform a zoom. However the 70-180 is as great at
any aperture as any prime of same focal length. Quite frankly set the zoom
at 100mm and shoot some subjects, take the lens off replace it with the
100mm 2.8 macro and shoot the identical objects and you'll not be able to
tell which subject was shot with which lens!
