Ted,
I agree with you fully and I noticed that you put the 2X on the lens first, 
then the 1.4X. I've always read that the strongest converter should be put on 
the prime lens first. Also, that prime lenses will always outperform zooms. 
I've found this to also be pretty much true, even with great lenses. 

I had the 70~210, f/3.5 Angenieu in the past, in brand "N" mount and found it 
to be a better performer than even an 80~200, f/2.8 Nikkor that I also had at 
the time. I used a Nikon TC-201, 2X teleconverter on both and did notice some 
degradation.
