Thanks, Alex! Your confidence in me is likely misplaced, but
encouraging, none the less. :-)
Never forget, that having a DM-R will no more make me a better
photographer than giving your average point and shoot user an R8! It's
not the equipment that does it!
As for being hand-held. Well, it was a family vacation, and I decided
to travel very light, leaving the monopod and 400 Telyt at home, so I
would not burden the group with my photography. It was a decision which
I will not make again!
As for the birds identifications... two factors are at play.
{1] Many of the species are migratory birds from North America, and show
up in the North American guide books.
[2] Whilst in Costa Rica, I purchased two local bird identification
charts. However the Costa Rican "Snake Bird"
(http://www3.telus.net/~telyt/Ahinga.htm) is found only in the Eastern
Lowlands. My charts are for the "Cloud Forest and Highlands" and for
the "Pacific Lowlands and Coast". Though it's known as the American
Darter or Black Darter, I had only the local name: "the Snake Bird". It
took some hunting on the net to find the needed information.
Cheers!
