[LRflex] Re: The latest Panasonic with the leica lens.

Hi-

I'm not sure which new Panasonic you mean. The FZ30 (the long zoom
just introduced) looks quite good. I have a FZ20- the immediate
predecessor of this one, with five MP and a slightly different lens. I
love it. It takes getting used to, but the image stabilization is a
lifesaver and the lens is enough of a Leica to produce very nice
images.

The biggest complaint about this series is the performance in low light
-- anything over ISO 100 is visibly noisy. That is not improved much
on the newest version I am afraid - small sensor, more pixels/mm. At
the same time, much of the squalling about noise comes from looking at
high magnifications on the monitor screen. I find the noise ok -I'd
like it if one could reliably shoot indoors without flash at high ISO
and get low-noise shots, but the OIS gives ISO 400 equivalence under
most conditions.

The -30 has a rotatable LCD, which is a big help, and the EVF is
supposed to be better. I found that manual focus takes some getting
used to with the EVF, because one does not see a sharper image, but a
"glittering" of the magnified pixels at the focus point.

Based on my experience with the FZ20, the -30 should be a versatile rig
for digital shooting, especially outdoors or indoors with an external
flash. Compared to the equivalent DSLR + lenses and on a cost-benefit
basis, it's hard to beat IMO. Mine is keeping my SL on the shelf more
than perhaps it should, but convenience is addictive.

good luck with choosing-
