>>I spent much of the day in the company of a staff photographer (the
Merritt Herald) and marvelled at the ease with which he used his Sigma AF
lens.

Given that my subjects were moving too fast to use AF-confirmation, I shot
10 photos to his one, to ensure I had something in focus! Last year, with
the R9, I found the job of "sports" photography much easier. I love my Leica
glass, for the image it gives, but now find myself thinking of something AF,
to parallel the 80~200/f4 Vario, for situations like this.<<<<

Hi David, re- auto focus.

This is part of a discussion with a news photog buddy of mine in Edmonton
just after Nikon came out with auto-focus lenses many years ago.

Me: "So how do you like auto focus? As I hear some guys bitching about it
not focusing on the right thing?"

HIS RESPONSE:

"I love it and every photographer will eventually use it! Look at it this
way. Before when I'd shoot down hill ski races with manual focus there were
always more out instead of in focus. Even after many years of shooting
manual, I might have a few dead sharp perfect out of 36 frames.

Now with auto focus I have 36 frames in focus, obviously not all great
pictures. But they're sharp and I have a higher selection of photos to
choose from!" :-)

So David I have to confess since using the 20D and auto focus I have great
difficulty looking at any future camera without auto focus capabilities.

I have my Leica lens focus confirmation adapter on the 20D for most of my
every day digi picture taking at the moment. But when I'm shooting
basketball it's auto everything start to finish!

Hit ratio end of game? About 99% in focus with a solid selection of good
photographs. Much much higher than any time working manual for all the years
of sport shooting including Olympic games.

Do you have to know how to make the auto focus work to your advantage? Yep!
But in no time at all one is clicking away like a fire storm while
completely concentrating on the subjects before you.

And before the anti auto focus people start! "DON'T BOTHER. Please!"

Thank you.

ted
