[LRflex] Re: Simplicity

Harry:

For sure, it resonates.

Wish I still had my '91 300E (with the SINGLE overhead cam, inline 6). =20=

A great car at any speed (especially the "less legal" speeds).

Now I drive the IDS Mk II of automobiles; a 2004 Prius. Three onboard=20=

computers constantly chatting each other up, big LCD screen etc.=20
digital on/off button, etc. But it's very, very Green and really does=20=

use precious little fuel. So far one of the best cars I've ever owned.

BUT: All thing considered, the 300E was probably the best (not the=20
fastest or the biggest, OK?) car Mercedes ever engineered. Can't begin=20=

to imagine what a similarly-built car would cost, today.

Same could be said for an M3 or even an R3MOT, don't you think?

but I=92m hesitant to add my thoughts since I consider myself such a=20
photographic amateur that I=92m really not qualified to criticize or=20
comment

but in this case I do have something to add.

I started out with a Nikon Photomic Ftn system (still have it with some=20=

great lenses including one of my all time favorites the 2.8/55 micro).=20=

I also have an R3Mot with a 2/50, 2.8/90 and 2.8/135 although I=20
understand that some pooh pooh the Minolta connection. I=92m partial to=20=

the Leica lenses
the most common, the 2/50 Summicron I consider truly great
I even like the 135 that=92s not supposed to be great! Unfortunately=20
these film cameras give me unpredictable results. Some good shots ,=20
some bad a few that I love. Typically shoot
..wait several days to a week for the processing then
Damn!
jiggled the camera or wrong exposure, someone blinked

etc etc etc. then I got a Canon D60. What a difference! Shoot a hundred=20=

exposures, correct as you go with generally good results led me to what=20=

I now have, a 1Ds Mk II. What=92s fabulous about the EOS is that I get =
to=20
not only use some excellent Canon L glass but I also get to use the=20
Leica lenses

and the Nikon lenses
and great Zeiss lense
  s
etc.
I must say that I get what I think are great shots even if they are=20
mostly of family and friends. That doesn=92t mean I don=92t still like =
to=20
get out the old film cameras and look at them, handle them and even=20
shoot a roll of film now and then (however lately it=92s mostly then).

But I do think I also have a perspective on the film/digital argument=20
because I have a mint, 1984 Mercedes 300D Turbodiesel that I will=20
likely never sell. I drive it almost every day and L-o-v-e it.=20
Exceptionally high quality (nothing like the kachunk of a 300D door=20
closing), talk about simplicity; no catalytic converter; manual seat=20
adjustment,; manual side mirror adjustment, legendary reliability=20
(Mercedes did the initial diesel engine design of this car in 1936),=20
fuel efficient, bulletproof ; I even love the noisy diesel and the=20
smell of the exhaust. A great car that I not only truly appreciate
but kind of worship. However I also understand that ABS brakes,=20
traction control, air bags, crash testing, four wheel drive, computer=20
controlled fuel systems, catalytic converters and pollution controls,=20
vast improvements in automatic transmission design, etc. in the final=20
analysis really make for a better automobile albeit a more complex and=20=

even finicky one.

But I=92m keeping my Mercedes!

Does this at all resonate?
