I think your main argument is right: there is undoubtedly a self
imposed form of censorship in the media. I am not sure I can agree
with you when you say

Unfortunately war and violence has always been and will contiue to be
as much part of the human condition as sickness and I think
unconsciously most people recognize this fact even if they wish it
were otherwise.
A major danger in gruesome reportage of wars is that it will either
increase anger and support for war or give rise to disgust and then a
shunning of those heroes you mention.
