ROM lenses, use the space originally occupied by the first cam for the ROM contacts. Thus, they also only work on "R" series bodies. However, the ROM can only be read by the R8 & R9 and is only used to set the variable reflector on some electronic flash guns. Otherwise, it has little functional value. Just so we're clear... <<< Unfortunately it's not always clear. Some 3rd-cam lenses were made with a Leicaflex-compatible flange so they actually can be used on these cameras, but since the lenses lack the Leicaflex metering cams metering is at working aperture on the SL and SL2. With slight modification many ROM lenses can be used on the Leicaflex SL (not the Leicaflex Standard or SL2) with full metering and without removing the ROM contacts. Also- a few 3-cam lenses will not fit the Leicaflex Standard or SL due to mirror box clearance problems.
