[LRFlex] Re: R8/9 - scary-looking or not?

Folks -

Yup; in the seventies I used my Nikon F and Leica M-4 without meters all the time, almost always with Tri-X. Lotsa easily printable negs. Incidently, I still guess first and set aperture & shutter speed on my M-6 before the camera reaches my eye and correct if necessary, thereby constantly re-training myself in this skill. And outdoor shots within an hour or so before sunset are still the hardest situations to guesstimate (as can be indoor shots with bright windowlight.) 'Course back then I also shot a lot of casual stuff with my Rollei 35 and guessed about focus.

Nowadays, though, ain't nobody gonna convince me that meters, like rangefinders and focussing screens, are any kind of bad starts to a slippery slope. Slide film and the 30x magnifier have had their influences.

In fact most of us in this group could probably do without
light meters. There would be the odd error but experience would teach.

It's a frightening thought at first but with negative film it's entirely
manageable. Last spring I used a battered SL with no meter for some family
snaps at the county fair, using ISO 400 (or for us old farts, that's ASA
400) color neg film. I cheated once in an indoor pavilion but otherwise it
was all guesstimated exposure based on Sunny 16. Everything was printable!!
There were some that were not optimum but they were all printable.
