[LRFlex] Re: R8/9 - scary-looking or not?

I have long enjoyed your pictures and your contributions to discussion. I
know the M is supposed to be the darling (and I prize my M6), but the R8

in these aged hands.

My question: is your 2x converter apo, or does the non-apo do a good job
for you?

Thanks...........Julian

Hi Julian!

Thank you for your kind words regarding my photos.

As for the 2x converter, it is an original SL converter, with no linkages such as found in the Converter-R. However, when used with the 400/f6.8 Telyt, there are no linkages anyway, so...

My converter does vignette in the corners with the 400. I had a chance, at the LHSA's Spring Shoot - last April, to try the 2x APO-Converter-R. A nice piece of kit and it does not vignette with the 400mm Telyt! However, with the 400 I noticed no discernible improvement in resolution, sharpness or contrast.

Since the 400 has some curvature of field it is normally used for subjects which occupy the center of the frame; thus the vignetting often serves to set the subject off rather well! Certainly, I wouldn't pay the difference for the APO over a good used non-Apo converter.

However, for those using their converter with shorter focal lengths, the APO may be better... my converter likes neither my nor Alex Hurst's 90 Summicrons at all - results, even at medium apertures, are downright lousy. However, it works well with the 80~200/f4 Vario and other than the vignetting, it's impossible to tell its being used with the 400 Telyt!

Cheers!
